HOW DOES YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM WORK?
East Africa is an ideal environment for solar power generation as the sun shines strongly for an average of 6 hours per day in most regions throughout the year. A solar power system can be used in areas where there is no mains power to provide you with sufficient power to run lights, a radio & a TV in your home.
The sun shining on the solar panel generates current in the solar cells, which then charges a battery. The battery is simply a store where the power is saved for use when you need it.
Only specially made solar lights, DC / AC TV’s, or battery powered radios can be used in a solar system as the battery produces DC power at 12 volts. Normal electrical appliances can be used, but it is expensive because they need AC power at 240 volts, which requires an inverter to change the voltage.
A Charge Controller is required to protect the battery from either over charging by the solar panels, or over discharging by the electrical appliances. Your battery should last 3-4 years with a good charge controller, but without it the battery will only last a few months.
HOW TO CHOOSE & MANAGE YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM
It is very important that your solar system is designed correctly, otherwise it will very quickly fail to operate properly, so it is advisable to buy a professionally designed kit from Sollatek. As our solar systems all use the same parts the "Small Kit" can always be upgraded to a larger system by simply adding another panel of the same wattage and increasing the battery size to power more lights or electrical appliances.
Providing the solar panel has received 6 hours of sunshine to fully charge the battery, the kits shown are designed to provide between 4 - 6 hours of light each evening . In the rainy season it will be necessary to minimise the use of your lights and electrical appliances as there will not be enough sun to fully charge the battery everyday, & it is important to clean your solar panels regularly for best performance.
You can operate small DC appliances, like a radio or a DC TV, in place of lights for upto 4 hrs per night providing the power requirement of the appliances is about the same as the lights. As a guide a radio consumes about the same amount of power as one light, while a DC black & white TV uses the same power as two lights. A colour TV should only be used with the Jumbo Kit as it consumes the same power as 6 lights.

All the components in our kits (except bulbs and batteries) come with a 5 year warranty & replacements are delivered free of charge to your local distributor. The solar battery has a one year warranty, and if you find it more convenient you may buy it separately from the local dealer in your area & the cost will be deducted from the kit price.
The 6 & 9 watt solar panels (used with the Glowstar lantern) come with a 10 year warranty, while all the other solar panels shown in this leaflet have a 20 year warranty. We accept warranty claims at any Sollatek Service Centre in East Africa.
Sollatek Charge Controllers use minimal battery power, have sensible voltage limits which will ensure that your battery lasts for several years & protect against both short circuit & overload.
The Sollatek 8 watt Ecolite last longer and provide more light when compared with other solar lights in the market.
All Sollatek Authorised Distributors have technicians trained by Sollatek to carry out professional solar installations, and the cost depends on the location and accessories required.
